Some youtube videos don't start

Hello there !

MotionBox is an absolutly fantasic piece of software, and might be what I was looking for a long, long time.

One small issue remains for me though; I’m using MotionBox 1.6.0-6 on Ubuntu 20.04 (KDE) with VLC installed, but most of the time, youtube videos won’t start.

Here are some more information :

  • Short videos seem to start and play without issues (e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkOK8tdEsFY)
  • Longer videos, however, will not start (e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4o87O4Pd_k). When “play” is clicked, the loading icon will appear for a very short moment, then disapear; and the video won’t play.
  • Some of those longer videos will play if the resolution if lowered; however, this doesn’t work all the time.
  • If “audio” is selected, then the audio plays without any issues.

Here it is; if you have any pointers as to how to solve this issues, I’ll be very grateful. Thank you for your amazing work !

Greetings @Klemet and thank you for your feedback,

I cannot reproduce that on Windows, but I’ll give a try on Ubuntu. Keep in mind that a 2 hours video could be long to start, due to the way VLC 3.0 currently handles input-slave (synchronizing video + audio).

https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/19689

Tested on Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS with VLC 3.0.8 the following starts on my side: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4o87O4Pd_k

Thanks for the reply, @bunjee !

I re-installed VLC at the latest version (3.0.11 Vetinari), and I still can’t get the longer videos to launch. The loading icon just disappears in a second or so, and nothing happens if I keep waiting. Symptoms are still the same. Clearing the cache doesn’t do anything.

I cannot see an option to find a log or something that could tell me what is happening (or rather not happening). Feel free to tell me if you want me to try something !

You can click on the application button (upper left corner) and then “Content” to find the log.txt file.

Maybe you can copy paste what it says when starting a longer video?

Thanks for the tip ! However, clicking on “content” doesn’t do anything; and I can’t find any log.txt in the folder of MotionBox. It looks like other “links” button in the MotionBox menu don’t work either.

I feel like I’m missing something important here; I apologize in advance if I’m wasting your time, and if it’s just a question of a package missing on my side. But I can’t find where the problem lays.

Okay, that shouldn’t happen either :). So you’re using Kubuntu 20 ?

I’m currently moving the build to Ubuntu 20.04, I’ll let you know once I have a binary for testing.

Hi bunjee.
I have the same issue except that I can’t get any YouTube video to run as video. If I select ‘audio’ the selected video will run but with audio only, exactly as above. I’m on Debian Testing (Bullseye) with a basic install using the i3 wm. I thought initially that I was missing a dependency, I still think that may be the case. I can’t access my log file through your suggested method but can ffind it manually. If you want a copy please let me know.
MotionBox used to work until I had to do a complete os reinstall.
Thanks for a splendid program.

daveA

My bad; seems like ubuntu updated recently. I’m in Ubuntu 20.10 Groovy Gorilla (with KDE), Development Branch. I don’t really know why, as I’m new to Linux. Maybe that’s where the problem comes from.

Still can’t access the log from my part.

Hi Klemet,

Bring up a file manager and set it to show hidden files, that should be in your file manager settings and ‘hidden’ files are of the form .filename. Open the ‘.local’ file in your user folder then ‘share’ then ‘MotionBox’. Your log file, log.txt, should be there. It’s not necessary to use quotes, I put them in for emphasis.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info, @daveA ! I was able to find it easily thanks to you : ).

I deleted the log.txt and then tried to launch two videos (this one and then this one). Here is what was generated in the log :

Hi Klemet,

I’m pleased you were able to find your log file, unfortunately it doesn’t really mean anything. Interestingly it’s a lot different to my log trying, and failing, to load the same videos as you. I had a lot of:
QImage::scaled: Image is a null image
It’s way above my level of knowledge, maybe bunjee would need to have a look and decide what to do to resolve the issue.

Cheers

I’m currently in the process of compiling MotionBox on Ubuntu 20.04 (at least for 64 bit).

I’ll keep you posted so you can try it on your side. The latest artifacts should be on here: https://dev.azure.com/bunjee/MotionBox/_build?definitionId=3

Just tested the linux64 artifact on Ubuntu 20.04.1 and it works pretty good: https://dev.azure.com/bunjee/MotionBox/_build/results?buildId=2239&view=artifacts&type=publishedArtifacts

Let me know if it improves the situation on your side.

Hi bunjee,

I’ve just tried the Linux64 Artifact (?) and it works perfectly. Thank you very much, you’re a superstar.

Hopefully it works just as well for Klemet.

Just tried it myself too, and it works like a charm ! @bunjee , you’re amazing. Really. MotionBox is what I’ve been looking for for a long time, and I still have trouble realizing how good it is.

I’ll make sure to share it everywhere I can. In the meanwhile, thanks a thousand time for addressing the issue !

@daveA , thanks a bunch for your help and patience too  . Glad it works for you too now !
